Welcome to Black Moon Sportfishing
The home of bluefin tuna fishing in the UK

At Black Moon Sportfishing, we like nothing more than taking our clients out on exciting day charters catching large fish. We focus on fishing for Bluefin Tuna and other exciting fish like bass, pollock, cod, conger, ling – anything that puts up a good fight! We’re always looking for the next challenge.
This year, we’re proud to announce that Black Moon has been selected to be one of just 15 UK charter boats to participate in CatcH And Release Tagging programme (CHART). The programme has been recently announced, and it means we can now take our customers out to catch the mighty bluefin tuna, which would then be tagged and released by our skipper.

There was an exciting feature on tuna tagging shown on The One Show recently – click here to watch it.

Before getting on the boat, our experienced and extremely knowledgeable skipper will plan your day with you and make sure you not only have the best chance to catch the big fish but have the best possible time doing it.

THE SKIPPER

Skipper Craig Hall, has sea water coursing through his veins. He is undoubtedly the most experienced big game fisherman available for charter in the UK, and he has brought that extensive experience to Black Moon. Craig loves every aspect of fishing. He has fished all over the world, covering everything from big game fishing to smaller fish, but his real passion is sportfishing. He describes it as the most extreme fishing, where you are pushed to your limits both mentally and physically.

Hailing originally from the small South African resort town of Warner Beach, he has been fishing his whole life and gained his skippers’ ticket at just 17 years old. Craig learned all about safety at sea during his time as a rescue boat skipper for the South African Navy. Later on, Craig concentrated on fishing for large sportfish, catching hundreds of tuna and marlin. When the opportunity arose to take part in the Exeter ICCAT Tagging programme, the lure of the largest and most expensive of the tuna species brought Craig to Falmouth.

His respect for the fish is evident, and he ensures a responsible and ethical approach to fishing. This isn’t about trophy hunting. If caught, big fish stay in the water, which keeps mortality rates low.

Our Skipper Charlie is a catch and release fisherman from a surfing and fishing village called St. Agnes on the North Coast of Cornwall, UK. He has been fishing his whole life and his father has been a keen fisherman in the local area for 50 years. Over the years he has owned several of his own boats and is a crazed bass lure angler at heart. His lifelong passion has been for fishing and exploring new ways to research and find new spots to fish. Charlie has also had great results when fishing in Ireland, Barbados and Indonesia.

Since starting working with Blackmoon Sportfishing in 2019, Charlie has qualified as a Day Skipper, completed his commercial endorsement, taken part in the Thunnus UK, Defra and Cefas blue fin tuna tagging programme, and even been part of filming for the upcoming Blue Planet series.

THE EXPERIENCE

Whether you are a complete novice or an accomplished angler, Black Moon Sportfishing promises to make your day an unforgettable fishing experience. You and your Skipper will discuss beforehand what you would like to do and what his recommendations would be. Every trip is different; it’s a fully bespoke experience with one thing guaranteed – exciting fishing. It’s usually a full day’s charter, and we’re fully aware that it’s your day, so we’ll do everything in our power to make it a success. As with every fishing trip, success isn’t guaranteed and sometimes we return empty handed – this just makes us more determined to succeed the next day.

When you book with Black Moon Sportfishing, your Skipper will have a good chat with you planning your day to make sure you get the exact experience you want. The Boat is yours for the day, and we want you to have an experience you will never forget.

Black Moon is licensed to carry up to 10 guests (although restrictions may apply during COVID-19)

We’ll provide everything you need for the fishing.

Our Skippers are highly experienced and well-respected in the sportfishing world. As you would expect, they take a responsible attitude, being conservation focussed and environmentally aware.

The Black Moon team fish all year around. Your skipper will advise which fish we can target, based on what is there to catch.

We have a relationship with a great local hotel – the Greenbank – located right on the water near the marina. For our guests staying there, we can pick you up from the Greenbank’s private pontoon in the morning and drop you back there on our return.

What’s included in the trip?

  • A full day sportfishing (8 am – 5 pm) in Falmouth Bay and beyond
  • All bait and fishing equipment
  • Tea, coffee and soft drinks
  • A light lunch made by the skipper (dietary requirements and special requests can be catered for) – (although may not be available during COVID-19)

You are welcome to bring your own food and drinks, although we would recommend limited alcohol for safety reasons.

Cooking your catch

To be able to catch and eat your own fish is fantastic and, if you would like to do this, we can include it in your day. Your skipper can help you target pollock, bass, mackerel, sardines, whiting or cod. He can even help you cook it on the boat’s barbeque when you return too.

What we’d recommend you bring with you:

  • Warm, wet weather gear
  • Sun protection: cream, hat with brim & sunglasses
  • Footwear with grip (no high heels)
  • Photography equipment
  • Your playlist if you’d like to fish to music (Bluetooth speakers are available)

Family and friends are always welcome. We also provide charters for photographers and film crews.

We can provide exclusive Black Moon merchandise that can be personalised for you.

FISHING FOR BLUEFIN TUNA IN THE UK

We’re very proud to say that Black Moon has been chosen as one of only 15 charters that can fish for Atlantic bluefin tuna in UK waters.

In recent years, the number of sightings of Atlantic bluefin tuna in our waters has been steadily increasing. This has led to a growing interest from scientists and recreational anglers and the commercial fishing sector. Because of our credentials, The Black Moon team were selected to fish for bluefin as part of the Thunnus UK bluefin tuna tagging programme since 2018. The Thunnus UK tagging programme is officially supported by The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) – the inter-governmental fishery organisation. The programme has been a fantastic experience for us, and numerous fish have already been caught, tagged and released.

This year, Black Moon has been selected as one of just 15 UK charter boats to take part in the CatcH And Release Tagging programme (CHART). CHART is designed to contribute to international bluefin tuna research and the potential socio-economic benefits it could bring to coastal communities.

And now you can be a part of this exciting programme too. The scheme has been adapted so that we are now able to take our customers out to catch the mighty Atlantic bluefin tuna, which would then be tagged and released by our skippers.

The tuna fishing season runs from mid-August to mid-November so book now and join us for a fantastic experience like no other.
